Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Overview

A group of students are participating in a robotics competition.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) is hands-on, career-connected learning that prepares students to be college, career and future ready! CTE courses integrate 21st century skills, professional and technical skills, and core academic knowledge. Some CTE courses provide the opportunity to earn college credit or industry certification.

Objectives

Students can:

  • Explore careers in high-demand, high-growth fields.
  • Identify a career goal.
  • Develop a High School and Beyond Plan, which identifies the high school and college-level academic and skills-based classes, training programs and apprenticeships that will prepare them for the future they choose.
  • Take classes in high schools, at skills centers and at community and technical colleges that apply math, science and other academic subjects in real-life, hands-on ways
  • Pursue rigorous programs of study that lead to registered apprenticeships, industry certifications and two- and four-year college options.
  • Earn tuition-free college credits as well as high school credits required for graduation.
  • Become leaders by participating in skills competitions and community service.

Educational Pathways

Four people are standing in a kitchen. They are wearing white chef coats and gloves. They are holding plates with food on them.

CTE is organized by a national framework call “Career Clusters”, which presents a complete range of related career options to students of all ages, helps them discover their interests and passions, and to choose the education pathway that can lead to success in high school, college, and their chosen career.  These clusters are found within the six career learning areas of the Oregon Skill Sets.

  • Agriculture, Food and Natural Resource Systems
  • Arts, Information and Communications
  • Business and Management
  • Health Sciences
  • Human Resources
  • Industrial and Engineering Systems
